Notion + Obsidian = ? I found a solution!

In a previous post I wrote about not liking Notion because it is much weaker than Obsidian, Logseq and other graph databases. But, Notion and other similar applications have some crucial features that are a must have for teamwork.

Let’s look into it.

What are the disadvantages?

To be clear, neither Obsidian nor Logseq position themselves as tools for teamwork (they do not have the ability to collaborate with other users), while the main love for Notion came from its easy onboarding of new users in the workspace.

Another equally important thing is its advanced table handling, namely the ability to do rollups, lookups and connections between different tables. Obsidian has its own query language for documents which is Dataview, but it does not provide this possibility for average user (it could be done theoretically but it would take a long time to figure it out and it is not sure it would work).

The third disadvantage is the lack of two-way integration with different services, such as Microsoft and Google. You can pull your calendar up there, but it’s just a picture and you can’t edit it or interact with it on the Obsidian side. For teamwork, this is an incredibly important feature.

And the last minus is the sparse collaboration task management. There are many problems with setting dates (you have to put them in a certain key:: value form to be able to query them), the lack of users as entities, and the lack of notification about tasks.

All of these seem to be very big disadvantages. But the pros are much more, so my team and I use it through various crutch solutions.

Where is the solution?

I haven’t really found a decent solution that covers all my needs at once. There are services with graph database, but they do not allow to make queries (this is a must have). There are others, but they don’t have the ability to query.

Well, graph databases are developing very actively, but at the moment there’s no solution which combines all the advantages of Obsidian and Notion. And… I decided to create one myself.

This service is called Morphic.

At first I thought I wanted to make a product and deploy it just for me and my team, but then I realized that there’s a bunch of people and companies that could really benefit from this solution. We did a little pivot and now we’re doing a custom solution.

It’s going to include all the things we love so much about Obsidian:

  • A graph database;
  • Just a graph query language (like SQL, only simpler);
  • Backlins and outgoing links.

And all the things we love about Notion:

  • Rollup, Lookup;
  • Sync with Google Services;
  • Collaboration;
  • Advanced task managemet (notification, easy date, easy task).

And yes, it’s all inside one product.

I want! How do I get access?

We’re working very hard right now to release the beta. You can leave your email now to get on the first user list.

Here’s the link: www.morphic.live

Just fill out the form and you will automatically be put on the early users list. As soon as we have the beta ready — we’ll email you right away and give you access.

Feedback from you is incredibly important to me and my team. Feel free to write whatever you need to. It’s valuable to us, and to our product.
